Chip Snaddon, one of the talented illustrators featured on Cape Town Creatives, has a degree in Fine Art and has been working as an illustrator, cartoonist and storyboard artist for the past twenty years. We are excited to feature some of his recent work – especially because the theme for most of the work is our beautiful country!

Chip has created a map of Cape Town’s central city – for the use of the Cape Town Partnership in their ‘City Views’ broadsheet – showing the CCID (Cape Town City Improvement District), fanwalk and more.

Nothing is immune from football fever this month! Chip’s World Cup-themed cartoons take a light-hearted look at the influx of foreign tourists to South Africa.

On a more ’serious’ note, Chip has also recently produced a striking logo for the Centre for Public Mental Health.

I graduated with a degree in graphic design from the Michaelis School of Art at UCT where I was taught/influenced by such SA luminaries as Neville Dubow, Kevin Atkinson, Peggy Delport, Katrine Harries, Stanley Pinker and Roman Waher.

As an artist, I cannot escape the need to bring laughter, colour and movement into my illustrations, although certain commissions require that I be more disciplined. I manage this by listening to morbid music on the radio. I’ve been illustrating professionally now for more than a decade.

I have worked for most local publishers in South Africa, including Juta’s, Maskew Miller Longman, Oxford University Press, Heinemann, Macmillan, Shuter and Shooter, Nasou, Cambridge University Press, Vivlia and Pearson Education SA.

I work mainly in acrylics, coloured watercolour pencils, crayon, pen and ink.

My favourite illustrators are: South Africa’s own Piet Grobler, Bob Graham, Tony Ross, Babette Cole, and Mary Rees.

Feeling Sheepish, a new children’s picture book by Sandy Mitchell

Gertrude cannot stop wondering about the way people talk about sheep. With sayings like the black sheep of the family, and just like sheep, she feels it might be better to go and live with the farm family. But soon the novelty wears off and when Gertrude gets stuck in a compromising situation, who will save her?

Feeling Sheepish is a heartwarming tale about standing out and fitting in!

Included with every book is a Gertrude soft toy.

Sandy Mitchell wrote and illustrated Wild Iris Herbal Handbook (Quivertree 2003) and recently illustrated Balaclava Boy (Tafelberg 2009) by

Jenny Robson. She’s co-owner of Blossom in Kalk Bay, and creates Scootah Ceramics with Tessa Gawith.

Getrude soft toys are hand-made locally by Montagu Sew & Sew, a woman’s collective also responsible for the limited edition Moxyland toy featured on the cover of the Lauren Beukes book. The toys were designed by Chantel Burger, who has extensive experience doing wardrobe in the film industry and is owner of the Lappop clothing label.

XLIBRIS Publishers published the cookbook LOVE GREEN FOOD by Larissa Green in 2008. Availble at bookstores nationwide.

Surface

I will be giving a presentation of my portfolio of work next week. The presentation is entitled ‘Surface’ and will focus on the area in which the disciplines of Architecture and Fine Art meet. I will be speaking about the full spectrum of work I have been involved in, including architecture, photography, illustration, wallpaper/fabric design and exhibition design. It would be great if you could attend.

Etsy in South Africa

Need an online shop to sell handmade goods to a global market? Look no further than Etsy.com.
An American site, Etsy serves thousands of buyers and sellers from all over the world, who have created a friendly, lively online community.
Setting up a shop on Etsy is free (and easy). All you need is a camera and an internet connection. Each seller gets their own shopfront, which they control, listing stock and handling sales and shipping themselves. Etsy charges a small listing fee, and a fee for sales.
There are a couple of Cape Town Creatives already selling on Etsy: Heather Moore, Sandy Mitchell, The Wren Design, Jesse Breytenbach. Why not join us?

Selling from South Africa involves a few small hurdles, like not being able to use Paypal for payments, but we’ve set up a dedicated Etsy South Africa team to share information. You can find our details on the Etsy Teams profile page, or contact us through the Etsy SA Flickr group.
