Your Street Competition

Design Indaba recently launched a competition inviting creatives and designers to re-imagine and re-engineer an aspect of street life in Cape Town and in doing so effect positive social change. The brief is to own your street, love your street and improve your street and the deadline for entries is: 31 August 2011.

R250 000 has been pledged for the designer who comes up with the winning idea and the motivation to implement it.

  • The first prize of R100 000 will be awarded to the designer that comes up with the best idea AND a sound business model that illustrates how their idea can feasibly be implemented.
  • Three second-place winners will each receive R50 000 for innovative design solutions that can be immediately implemented using the prize money.

Here are some ideas as to what the judges will be looking for:

  1. Generosity: How many people other than you does your design solution effect positively?
  2. International excellence and innovation: Does your design solution stand up to and trump similar world-class ideas? Is it new, original and forward-thinking?
  3. Feasibility: How do you propose to allocate the R50 000?
  4. Fun: How much pleasure, enjoyment, beauty and smiles do your design solution inspire
  5. Do: Can and will the design solution actually be executed?
  6. A better world through creativity: How does your design solution make the world better and further inspire other people to make the world even better?

Goematronics Remix Competition

Goema – the musical idiom found at the heart of jazz standards by Abdullah Ibrahim, Robbie Jansen and Basil “Mannenberg” Coetzee – has long been an integral part of Cape Town’s social tapestry and soundscape. Now Creative Cape Town, in partnership with Red Bull Studio, Paul Bothner Music, BPM magazine, African Dope Records and online Cape Town music station Mutha FM, is looking to take that sound forward. They’ve launched the Goematronics Remix Competition and are inviting local musicians and digital enthusiasts to create their own goema-inspired remix.

Significant prizes are on offer: First prize includes a full week’s worth of Red Bull Studio time – including use of the studio, recording and music production equipment, and the time of an engineer to oversee the project – valued at R35 000, as well as studio software Cakewalk from Paul Bothner Music, valued at R5 500.

The competition runs from 1 July to 28 August 2011. To qualify, entrants must load at least one goema-inspired remix onto the Goematronics group on SoundCloud www.soundcloud.com/groups/goemarati-remix-competition before midnight on 28 August 2011. Goema beats, banjo and sax samples can be downloaded from SoundCloud or entrants can create their own.

The winners will be announced during Creative Week Cape Town, between 9 and 18 September 2011, following a decision by the judging panel, which includes Roach (African Dope Records), Mr Mo (Mofunk) and Denver Turner (formerly of Moodphase5 and Tykoon Suit).

Says Creative Cape Town’s Zayd Minty; “We have this wonderful home-grown sound and we have real talent in our city. Our hope is that this competition will fuse these two elements and sow the seeds for a truly Capetonian musical movement.”
